A flood permit is required for any development in flood hazard areas. This presentation will cover some of the difficulties of floodplain management in coastal areas, where not just buildings but bulkheads and docks each have their areas of concern. We will review some of the published coastal design guidance found in ASCE 24 and ASCE 7, FEMA publications P-55, P-646 and USACE EM 110-2-1614. We will discuss finding partnerships with internal divisions (Planning, Shoreline, Building), industry professionals, as well as coordination with the Shoreline Management Act (sorry, this part is Washington specific).

Instructor: Dennis Dixon, CFM. Dennis is a floodplain engineer for Pierce County – Planning & Public Works within the Floodplain Services section of Surface Water Management. He has been at SWM for the last 25 years with the last few years heavily involved with flood permit reviews.
